The ABYC Marine Electrical Certification course has historically only been offered in a 3-day in-person classroom format is available 100% online in an interactive experience! ABYC Instructor Mike Telleria will lead LIVE webinar sessions, 3 days a week for 3 weeks (each 90 minutes long). See the Course Details tab for more information and schedule.

Course Topics:

The ABYC Electrical Certification has become the most recognized and credible demonstration of skill mastery in the marine electrical service and installation field worldwide. Become an industry expert in electrical fundamentals, multi-meter usage, grounding and bonding systems, battery and inverter installation, AC/DC components & more!

The course is designed for the marine professional with at least 3 - 5 years’ experience working with marine electrical system design, installation or repair.

The successful certification candidate should have some familiarity with ABYC standards and topics covered listed below.

Live Online Class Schedule:

Live course sessions are held 3 days a week for 2 weeks from 9:00am – 10:30am ET each day.

  • April 9-11
  • April 16-18
  • April 23-25

How this course works:

  • Login to this learning management site during the scheduled live event to participate.  
  • Each session with cover 1-2 chapters in chronological order of study guide
  • Q&A with instructor at the end of each session

Certification Exam Testing:

At the end of the course you will take the certification exam online, you will be testing through an online proctoring service. More information will be provided during the course.

Scheduling the exam will be left up to the attendee, you may schedule your testing date & time based on what works best for you. You will be given a test by date, if you do not test by the given date there is a $25 extension fee due to receive a new test by date.

Exam retesting: If you happen to not pass the first time, you may sign-up to retest at anytime. There is a retesting fee of $179 per attempt. There is no deadline to sign-up to retest by, you may retest when you are confident and ready to challenge the exam.


Certification Designations:

ABYC has created certification designation titles to better associate the type of work being done by the individual.  Advisor Certification or Technician Certification titles will be assigned upon passing the certification exam.

ADA Requests:

Students with ADA accommodations must inform the ABYC in writing of said needs at the time of class registration to ensure that any special accommodations can be made for exam taking. Students may use a calculator during the exam.


Cancellation/Refunds:

Requests for cancellation and refund of a class registration must be submitted, in writing, no less than 10 days prior to the course start date. A $150 cancellation fee will apply. Refunds will not be considered for non-attendance. Cancellation requests may be emailed to Casey Bates at cbates@abycinc.org. Refunds will be issued within 30 days after the course end date.

Mike Telleria

Engineering Manager

Nordhavn Southwest

With more than a decade of time at Nordhavn, Mike currently oversees the engineering department, creates the electrical system design for all boats, and serves as a compliance officer to ensure boats meet ABYC and other applicable standards. Mike brings a rich mixture of engineering experience and leadership to the Nordhavn team. Before spending a number of years as an engineer on commercial ships, Mike earned a degree in Marine Systems Engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, and an unlimited U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Assistant Engineer’s license. He also spent more than 10 years in the world of recreational boating journalism as a managing editor for titles including Sea, Lakeland Boating, and Go Boating – and currently writes articles for Professional Boatbuilder magazine, Boating magazine, and others.
