Marine Corrosion Certification - Online LIVE - October 2025

Includes a Live Web Event on 10/21/2025 at 9:00 AM (EDT)

ABYC’s Marine Corrosion Certification course is designed for marine professionals with a minimum of 3-5 years of practical experience. It is strongly recommended that certification candidates possess the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification before enrolling in the Marine Corrosion Certification course. The course assumes candidates have foundational knowledge in areas such as electrical groundingcurrent flowgalvanic isolation, and basic marine electrical concepts.

The program covers a broad spectrum of essential topics, helping participants develop a deep understanding of corrosion mechanisms, prevention techniques, and industry standards.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, this course includes a review of ABYC E-2 (Cathodic Protection) and A-28 (Galvanic Isolators) standards.. Through the examination of real-world case studies, participants will learn to recognize various types of corrosion, implement effective mitigation strategies, and conduct comprehensive corrosion surveys.

By the end of the course, individuals will have a solid foundation to identify, assess, and address corrosion issues in marine environments, and will be well-prepared to take on the Marine Corrosion Certification Exam.

Certification Advisement Recommendations:

  • ABYC Electrical Certification (strongly recommended)
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in the marine field
  • Understanding of basic electrical and corrosion concepts

Course Topics:

  • Basics of Matter: Understanding atoms, molecules, ions, and how they interact.
  • Chemical Bonding & Electrochemical Reactions: Exploring how chemical processes affect marine corrosion.
  • pH and Corrosion: The role of acidity and alkalinity in corrosion.

Certification Exam Testing:

At the end of the course, participants will take the certification exam online through a third party proctoring service. More details are provided on the Exam Info tab during the course.

Scheduling the exam is flexible and up to the participant. Participants may schedule their testing date & time . Online testing is available Mondays through Wednesdays all day and Thursdays until 1pm (ET). There will be given a 30 day test by deadline, if you do not test by the given date there is a $25 extension fee due to receive a new test by deadline.

Exam retesting: If you do not pass on your first attempt, you may sign-up to retest at anytime. There is a retesting fee of $179 per attempt. There is no deadline to sign-up to retest by, you may retest when you are confident and ready to challenge the exam.

Certification Designations:

ABYC's Certified Advisor or Certified Technician certification designations align with the type of work being performed by the individual. Upon passing the certification exam, participants will be awarded with the Marine Corrosion Advisor certification or Marine Corrosion Technician certification, depending on their role and work experience.

Mike Bonicker

ABYC Lead Instructor

American Boat and Yacht Council, Inc.

Mike Bonicker worked with Tidewater Yacht Service in Baltimore for over 20 years, starting as a tech for 5 years doing general repair, electrical and sailboat rigging. He climbed the ranks and became production manager for the remaining 15, still  doing hands-on electrical and sailboat rigging work throughout his tenure.

He received his first ABYC certification, Electrical, under the instruction of Ed Sherman at New England Institute of Technology in 2000 and became a Master Tech with Standards and Corrosion by 2005.

Additionally, he has served with pride on the board of the Marine Trades Association of Maryland for over 12 years.

Boating started as a teenager for Mike when he learned to sail at 13 and raced for over 20 years and he's been a life-long fisherman from the age of 5 owning several boats both sail and power along the way.
