Professional development for the marine industry

Advanced Marine Electrical Certification - Online LIVE - August 2026

As the electrical and electronics systems on recreational vessels become more complex, the electrical technician must advance their knowledge base to keep pace with them.

This course offers a deeper look at some subjects from the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification course, such as alternative charging sources, AC power-conversion equipment, and galvanic isolation, as well as introducing the advanced topic of three-phase power distribution and the ever-advancing technology of electric propulsion. Information on troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with these systems is also discussed.

This course is ideal for marine electricians and maritime professionals looking to enhance their skills and ensure the safe operation of electrical systems on vessels. The course is designed for the marine professional with at least 3-5 years experience working with marine electrical system design, installation or repair.

While holding the Marine Electrical Certification is not required, we highly recommend obtaining that certification prior to taking this advanced course.

Topics Include:

  • Advanced Electrical Diagnostics: Systematic approaches for troubleshooting electrical faults.
  • Electrical Control Circuits: Discussion of multiple components, sensors, and monitors used for controlling electrical circuits in marine applications.
  • Three-Phase Power Distribution: Characteristics, properties, and implementation in marine applications.
  • Power Quality Analysis: Investigating, identifying, and mitigating power anomalies.
  • Voltage Regulation: Parameters of voltage regulation for AC generators and engine-driven alternators.
  • Alternative Energy Sources: Renewable-energy DC charging sources, including solar, wind, hydrogenerators, and associated voltage regulation.
  • AC Power-Conversion Systems: Design and components of systems for onboard electrical isolation, power conversion, and paralleling of multiple AC sources for cogeneration.
  • Electrical Propulsion Systems: Specifications, requirements, and installation of marine electric-propulsion systems.
  • Digital Switching Systems: Installation, operation, and capabilities of advanced digital switching technology.
  • Fail-Safe Galvanic Isolation: Preventing galvanic corrosion between vessels through galvanic isolation.

Standards Covered:

  • A-32, AC Power Conversion Equipment and Systems
  • TH-12, Three-Phase AC Electrical Systems on Boats
  • A-27, Alternation Current (AC) Generator Sets
  • E-11, AC and DC Electrical Systems for Boats
  • E-30, Electric Propulsion Systems
  • S-31, Environmental Considerations for Electronic Systems and Components Installed on Boats.
  • A-28, Galvanic Isolators

Certification Exam Testing:

The certification exam is composed of 204 multiple-choice questions and timed at 3 hours and 30 minutes. The question content consist of approximately 30% Standards-based and 70% experiential material. At the end of the course, participants will take the certification exam online through a third party proctoring service. More details are provided on the Exam Info tab during the course.

There will be a 30-day test-by deadline. If you do not complete the exam by the given date, a $25 extension fee will be required to receive a new test-by deadline.

Exam retesting: If you do not pass on your first attempt, you may sign-up to retest at anytime. There is a retesting fee of $179 per attempt. There is no deadline to sign-up to retest by, you may retest when you are confident and ready to challenge the exam.

ADA Requests for the Certification Exam:

We want to ensure that you have the necessary support and accommodations to succeed. If you require any accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or any other support, please let us know as soon as possible so we can make appropriate arrangements. Students with ADA accommodations must inform the ABYC in writing of said needs at the time of class registration to ensure that any special accommodations can be made for exam taking.

Certification Designations:

ABYC's Certified Advisor or Certified Technician certification designations align with the type of work being performed by the individual. Upon passing the certification exam, participants will be awarded with the Marine Electrical Advisor certification or Marine Electrical Technician certification, depending on their role and work experience.
